MEMORY PRESERVATION SALTS

As part of my residency with my sister Rebecca in Brixton Market in 2011, we resurrected our great-grandfather Woolf Beinart’s company, The Darling Salt Pans and Produce Co., and produced these Memory Preservation Salts, with salt hand-harvested from the same salt pan Woolf had harvested from in South Africa. This came out of a long-term project called Origination in which we attempt to investigate and re-enact our ancestors migratory journeys.

 

I have become very interested in the qualities of salt, which has many associations with memory, preservation and ritual and the idea for the Memory Salts came in part from ritual products which are on sale in Brixton Market.

TRAIL OF CRUMBS INCENSE & BLACK STAR / BLACK SHEEP BIRD SEED

The Trail of Crumbs represents the efforts we make to stay connected to home, and also how vulnerable those connections can be. Burn your incense on a charcoal disc, or put a little on the lightbulb of a table lamp like my mum used to do. Your trail will be protected and you will never forget the way back home.

Use your Bird Seed to make a feeder and offer nourishment to the birds who leave one home for another at this time of year. My heritage is mixed and my family stories include migrations from Ghana, Canada and Australia. Migrating birds are emblematic of those multiple homes, the epic journey, of time spent in-between, and of movement between spaces that is as instinctive and intelligent as it is risky and heroic. Use a dried out pine cone or toilet roll tube, tie a length of string securely to the top, cover the pine cone in lard or peanut butter, roll it in your seed and hang from a branch.

Food and music were the traces of home that comforted us as connected my sister & I to our parents migration story.

 

The spice mix consists of a soundscape of a my Legacy Tunes of 1960’s Hi Life that played in my home when I was growing up & a short edit of Legacy Tunes 001 where the young people from The Leaders of Tomorrow shared their Legacy Tunes with me.

 

Use the spices to make Kelewele a taste of my home. Get some ripe plantain from the market & chop into small cubes. Marinate the plantain in the spice mix with lemon juice & a little vegetable oil for an hour or more. Then fry the plantain in hot oil until crispy.
